Putting LSI to Work for You with High Profile Article Marketing

To understand this, you’ll also have to have some understanding of anchor text linking and why it’s important, in addition to LSI, which we’ve already talked about.

To keep it really short and simple, anchor text links are among the most powerful one-way links you can get back to your site.

Two things would make them more powerful. One of those I never talk about in public. I’ll go over it briefly in the High Profile Article Marketing Seminar Series during the second multimedia set. It heightens the effectiveness of anchor text linking so much that it’s just too precious to share in public.

The other thing that can make a one-way anchor text link even more powerful is when the link is in a larger context that relates to the page that it is linked back to - and with article marketing, there are several ways you can generate these types of links yourself.

With even the most basic article marketing campaign, you can target an article to be contextually on the same topic as the area of your site that you are linking towards. But with high profile article marketing, once you start to show up in high profile publications that have editorial processes or are staff-only publications, the link is even more valuable, because everyone can’t get it.

This is part of why you need to go beyond attempting to get what I call “bare” links back to your site - the ones that just appear as http://www.freetraffictip.com. You also want relevant anchor text links, the ones that might appear like so: Free Traffic Tips.

Why would I want this?

Because anchored text gives another level of value to the link in my article.

By using a keyword I would like to rank for, I’m sending a message to whatever search engine spider comes across my link. I’m saying “Let me make your job easier. The site www.freetraffictip.com is directly relevant to Free Traffic Tips. Build an association between this text and this keyword phrase.”

Now, if for example, Google sees this one time, it may take note but not use the information in your favor.

If it sees this happen ten times, at ten different sites, it may start to weigh this factor in your favor. When it sees it 50 or 100 times, from sites it considers important, embedded in articles that are on that same topic, it notices this as a pattern.

These kinds of patterns are a site’s best friend. To realize why - you only have to remember your good friend LSI.

And if only that is all there was to it. But alas, your good old neighborhood search engine is a little more intelligent than that.

There are a few specific strategies you need to keep in mind when you’re using this method to get better keyword rankings. You need to know how to do the keyword research properly, and set up your site so that it isn’t your article and the other article sites that benefit the most from the keyword you targeted, or you’ll end up pointing the search engines in the wrong direction.

If you want to see this common mistake in action, go to any article directory, such as EzineArticles.com, Echievements.com, GoArticles.com or PromotionWorld.com. What you’ll see is that some people who have successfully learned how to use anchor text linking are implementing in such a way that the results are all pointing in the wrong direction!

I challenge you to pick any ten articles where you see a keyword phrase hyperlinked in a resource box, and find two that are using anchored text linking properly. (And first, look at the article. You can tell who is only interested in trying to manipulate the search engines with mediocre content, and who is writing articles people will actually want to read.)

8 out of 10 people’s sites will not come up before any of the directories where their article is reprinted for the keyword phrase they linked to in their resource boxes. As a matter of fact, you probably won’t even find them for a similiar phrase.

Even worse, they have no idea that this technique is actually having the opposite effect.

So what happened? And how can you keep this from happening to you?

Mistake #5 - Trying to Make One Article Do Too Much

An article just can’t do the same job as a short PDF report, an entire web site, your book, or DVD series. And it wasn’t meant to either. Stick within suggested word counts, and keep your resource box as simple as you can. Also, only about a third of your articles need to have the motive of enhancing your SEO efforts.

Remember, you can get penalized for over-optimization as well, particularly in the case of uniform anchor text.

It’s not always a great idea to pepper your article with links either. When all the links are to your own site, they probably won’t get hyperlinked anyway. Even if they do, the more your article appears to be purely about promoting your site, as opposed to providing information, the less likely that your links will be clicked.

If the links are to other sites that you’re reviewing as resources, this can work, but in the case of more than a handful of sites, it’s often a better idea to offer a free ebook from your site containing the full reviews.

Yes, your article should be as informative as you can make it, but if you find yourself near your word limit, save the rest of the tips for next time, or continue at your own site.

Mistake #6 - Leaving Them Wanting Less

What’s the point of submitting every day if your objective is to get your article picked up by a publisher? In a way, you have to think of your potential ezine publisher as a prospect as well - a confused prospect just goes away. Shoving 20 articles under their noses gives them 20 times the amount of work to do.

The issue of confusing your prospect can also be an issue if you’re only submitting to article directories as well. Think of what happens when you see a commercial for a show you’d like to see on television too often. What happens when your favorite song gets played on the radio a bit too much?

No matter how much you may love that TV show or your favorite song, there’s a point of over-saturation that causes you either to begin to ignore it - or worse yet - actually hate the very mention of it. You don’t want this to happen to your content.

There’s also the issue of pacing yourself. Every writer eventually runs into one of two problems - a lack of ideas for new material, or a lack of time to write them up. You could derail much of your efforts of increasing exposure to your site if you aren’t able to keep up the supply of content you produce.

The most common advice is to submit an article a week. Through a distribution service, or to publications that are geared towards ezine publishers who want content, this is probably best. If you’re submitting directly to article directories, more often than that may be okay if the site’s guidelines allow it - but more than that is overkill.

If you really want to send out content on a daily basis, you’re better off syndicating yourself through a blog or RSS feed at your own site and generating your own group of subscribers.

Mistake #7 - Stopping Half Way Through the Promotional Process

This has got to be the top mistake of marketers who say “This just doesn’t work for me.” True, you may start to see links or even traffic within 24 hours of your article being submitted, however, if you don’t promote your articles deeply and widely enough, you’re probably not going to see your desired results.

First of all, particularly when you’re just establishing yourself as an expert, you need to submit to as many places as you can.

Most people only submit to ten or fifteen high traffic article banks with high Google PR, not realizing that there may be up to 100 sites that will take their articles that get most of their readers via RSS , ezine publications, or even through distribution offline. My short list of places that have brought me publicity contains over 400 sites, most of which take articles on just about any topic.

So not only should you be submitting your article to more places, doing this for two weeks and then stopping is not going to bring you any long-term effects. Your first four weeks as an article marketer should see you submitting at least one article a week.

If you don’t have it in your schedule to write and submit that often, then get a ghostwriter and hire a distribution service. (Just be aware that even a distribution service won’t be able to send your articles to every single place you want to submit to.)

You could also write many articles in advance, and get someone else to do the submissions for you.

Mistake #8 - Improper Use of Past Content

One trick that some article marketers use is to attempt to recycle an article they’ve already written. That’s not to say that this technique doesn’t have potential. But you also can’t possibly expect publishers to accept content that is simply a re-hash of what they’ve already seen before.

So don’t just change the title and re-submit. Change your content as well. You can do this by re-targeting to another audience. Maybe your business tips for work at home moms could be geared towards small business if you add, remove and change a few things.

Article marketing is one of the simplest and easiest ways to increase visitors to your site if done correctly, and has inherent search engine benefits as well.

It’s not just cheaper than regular methods of advertising - proper article marketing provides you with a type of publicity that money can’t buy.

Article Marketing - How to Make It Work For You

Information based marketing is one of the oldest and most effective techniques for bringing targeted prospects to your site and converting them into buyers. This is part of the reason that software, and distribution services that make the process of article promotion easier are so popular lately.

Though the various tools you can use to make the process of distributing your articles more easily are invaluable in getting your content to the places that have the most potential to bring you exposure, that’s only half of the story. Getting article marketing to work for your site lies in two things:

• The article you’re submitting, and
• The preparation you do before you a single word of your content is written.

Since those two determining factors make at least 50% of the difference in bringing you success, let’s take a look at what the most common mistakes are in that area, and how to overcome them.

Mistake #1 - Confusing the Reason to Promote with Articles with the Reason to Write an Article

There are three reasons to promote an article - branding, lead generation and as a corollary, to promote your site. Yet there is only one reason to write an article, and that is to inform your audience. If your article is not geared towards this as its primary purpose, you will fail to see the three benefits of promotion - no one will want to read your article.

How many links you’re able to generate by submitting your article to hundreds of sites will matter little if you’re unable to get them picked up by publications, or read by people who search for information.

Sure, if you know what you’re doing all those links pointing back to your site will count for something in your search engine results - but remember that generating links to your site is only one part of optimizing your site for Google, Yahoo or MSN. And if everyone is doing it, the effect will be dulled.

To overcome this issue, you’ll need to figure out how to get people to read what is in your article, and then click through to your site from your resource box.

Mistake #2 - Starting The Article Promotion without a Plan

Not every article can fulfil all three purposes of promotion. Some will work better for branding, others can generate leads and increase sales. But if you don’t start out with a plan for what the function of your article should be, you’ll end up unhappy with the results.

To overcome this issue, before you write a single word, decide what purpose the article is supposed to serve. An article meant to brand you as an expert should display your knowledge. One for generating leads may need to be geared towards solving a very specific problem.

Mistake #3- Content That Doesn’t Help Your Reader

Maybe you’re thinking: “All I want is links back to my site - any visitors the article generate is gravy.”

Well guess what? Not all article banks and directories are going to accept your content automatically. You can double the number of sites you can submit to by writing articles that the directories want to share with readers - and all it takes is one publisher with a hundred thousand readers to increase your potential audience tenfold.

So if you want article marketing to work for you, write articles that publishers want in their publications.

This also means obeying the standard guidelines, running a spell check, or even hiring a writer to produce articles on your behalf.

Mistake #4 - Failing to Maximize the Promotional Opportunities of Article Marketing

You already know that articles marketing can help you generate additional links back to your site. But did you know that you can get more visitors and better search engine results from articles in a variety of ways?

You can mention your desired keyword in strategic places, though you should take care not to overdo this. Some people will also tell you to make use of anchor text, which can also is an effective method. However, you should know that the majority of directories and publications aren’t able to support this.

There are alternatives to this method that are just as effective, if not more so, but they require more space to explain.

Search Engine Submit Scams

I'm sure you've seen the ads for search engine submit services and software -- you know the ones that boast they will submit your website to hundreds or even thousands of search engines for a certain fee?

Well, don't buy into these schemes -- even if they are offering something for free.

First of all, around 85 percent of all search engine traffic come from Google, Yahoo!, MSN and other portals of these sites. Portals are search engines that use results from other engines.

For example, AOL's search results come from Google. So once you are optimized for Google's search engine, then those same rankings will apply for AOL. Netscape and any other portal that uses Google's results.

The other search engines make up the remaining percentages and most of them don't even account for a full 1% of all search traffic.

In other words... they're NOT worth submitting to!

Second, most search engine submittal services use automated software to attempt to submit your site. What they don't tell you is that most engines IGNORE any kind of automated software submissions so when they attempt to add your site, it just gets rejected or ignored.

Yes, some of the smaller engines may allow the automated submissions, but they don't get enough traffic to do you any good -- so it ends up being a moot point anyway.

Who cares if you're listed in Search123.com if they only make up .0005% of overall search engine traffic.

Yahoo!, MSN, and Google are the only three search engines that matter right now.

Third, many engines are now banning sites that continuously submit. They consider it "spamming". So if you're using a submission service that promises a monthly or quarterly submission, then they could be putting your site in danger of getting permanently banned or blocked!

The tricky part is that it varies from search engine to search engine. One engine may allow multiple submissions, while another may not.

Of course you, the unsuspecting consumer, has no way of knowing all this. These companies just take your money while you await the traffic that will never come.

Notice that many of these companies never claim your site will be listed...they just promise the submittal. What about all those sites that reject automated submissions? Are they going to do them all by hand?

They know most of their customers don't know much about the search engine optimization world so they bank on it...literally! I mean if you're a beginner with no website traffic and you see an ad to submit your site to thousands of engines for $20, that would sound like a pretty good deal wouldn't it?

I've Been Victimized Myself.

I fell into this trap when I was a newbie online marketer. I used to buy submission software and submit to companies that offered thousands of submissions.

They also submit to free classifieds or free for all link sites that only get visits from other traffic-seeking webmasters. Consumers don't go here to look for information. They go to Google, Yahoo, MSN; and if they're looking to buy something the visit familiar commercial websites like Amazon.com.

In addition, many of these companies now state they'll list your site by hand for some of the engines and directories. I find that hard to believe because that would take a ton of work, especially if the orders are rolling in. Again, how could they really prove this since most search engines don't send email confirmations.

Also, some of the directories that really count require a one-time fee to even consider listing your site. How do these submission sites like handle these situations?

The answer is, "They don't!" They're misleading you into thinking you are going to get a lot of traffic when they are really taking advantage of your ignorance of search engines.

Do it Yourself for Free!

Since Google, MSN and Yahoo are the three main engines you need to be concerned about, here's a quick overview of how to get listed in all three. You don't need a submission service when you can do it yourself in minutes.
Submitting to Google

Getting listed in Google, the most popular search engine, is absolutely free and one way to get in is to submit to www.dmoz.org (The Open Directory).

Unfortunately it may take some time to get listed here because the directory is run by all volunteers and there's no real hurry for the editors to add your site.

Also, if your site is rejected, most editors won't tell you why. So it definitely takes some patience. Just be sure your site is polished and has enough unique content before you submit.

If you can't get into The Open Directory you can use Google's "Add URL" link here http://www.google.com/addurl.html. However I will tell you that this method is not guaranteed.

Another way to get into Google is to be linked from a site that is already in the engine. When Google visits the site that's already listed, it may find your site and add it to its index.
Getting Listed in Yahoo!

Yahoo! is unique because it has a searchable directory and a regular search engine like Google. It's also important to note that if you're listed in one that doesn't mean you're automatically listed in the other.

The categorized directory is rarely searched. Most people use the normal search function on the Yahoo! homepage. However, some experts say if you have a listing in their directory it can help your positioning in Google.

In order to get into Yahoo!'s directory you must submit manually. Go to their site and drill down to the category that best describes your site.

Click the "Suggest a Site" link. If your site falls into a commercial category then you must pay a mandatory $299/year fee. If your site is non-commercial then you can suggest for free but there's no guarantee you'll get listed.

To get listed in their regular engine, it helps to be listed in other engines or linked from other sites that are already in Yahoo!'s directory. That way Yahoo! can find (spider) your site and add it to their search engine.

Another way is to submit directly using their "Add URL" form. There is no guarantee you'll get listed this way, but it can't hurt to try. You should only have to submit your homepage. Yahoo's spider will find the rest of your pages.

Submitting to MSN

To submit to MSN go to their "Add URL" page. You should only have to submit your homepage and it will find the rest of your site.

Most of the time MSN will add you faster than Google and Yahoo so you may find your site listed pretty quickly.

Don't Keep Submitting

Once you submit to the search engines, you must be patient. Don't panic if you don't see your site in the index. It may take weeks or even months. Keep adding content to your website and check monthly to see if it has been added by typing your address in the search field.

In Summary

Most search engine submit software and services are nothing but scams, and it's time we start to take a stand against them.

Don't give them a red cent -- instead educate yourself on how to REALLY get listed with the major search engines and be sure to drop these submit services an email letting them know that they weren't successful in suckering you into believing their submit service actually works.
